Helen R. Biggar, age 95, of Dunmore and formerly of Moosic, passed away Wedneday morning at Green Ridge Health Care Center, where she had resided the past five years. She was preceded in death on March 24, 1990, by her beloved husband of 45 years, John Biggar.
Born in Scranton on October 14, 1921, Helen waas the daughter of the late James and Helen Monie Rowlands. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, Class of 1939, before earning her Bachelors Degree in Education from Beaver College (now Arcadia University) in 1943. She taught Home Economics at the former Dalton and Newton Ransom High Schools before earning her Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Marywood College in 1963. From 1963 until her retirement in 1979, Helen served as the Guidance Counselor at Old Forge High School.
A former member of the Moosic Presbyterian Church, Helen played a very active role teaching Sunday School and serving as organist. Upon moving to Dunmore, she joined the Presbyterian Church of Dunmore where she also became an active member of the church family. The oldest member of the congregation, she served as an elder and deacon, was a member of the Presbyterian Women and was also part of the ‘ugly quilts group,’ making sleeping bags for the homeless.
She was a member of The Century Club and, for 16 years, was a Tuesday volunteer at Moses Taylor Hospital. Her selflessness was awarded with a 3, 000 hours pin to acknowledge her efforts. Kind, thoughtful, caring and loving, Helen will long be missed by her dear family and friends.
She is also survived by two children, her daughter Jean Biggar of Dunmore, and her son, Jim Biggar and wife Ann of Gettysburg; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helen’s family would like to both thank and express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Celtic Hospice, Dr. Nicholas Dodge, and to, especially, the entire staff of Green Ridge Health Care Center. Their amazing care and compassion along with the kindness and friendship of the volunteers, the residents and their families, made the past five years so much more comfortable for both Helen and her family. They will always be grateful.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 11:00AM at the Presbyterian Church of Dunmore, 137 Chestnut Street in Dunmore, to be celebrated by Rev. Kenneth Forbes, Pastor. Interment will follow at Langcliffe Cemetery in Avoca. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 2-4:00PM and 6-8:00PM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, and at the church on Saturday from 9:30AM until services.
