Thomas J. Melisky Sr., 91, of West Scranton, died early Wednesday morning at home after an illness. His former wife, Jean Mitchell Melisky, preceded him on death on May 12, 1995.
Born in Scranton on February 23, 1925, and son of the late Michael and Josephine Ropel Melisky, Thomas was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School class of 1943. For 25 years before his retirement, he worked as press operator for Capitol Records of Scranton followed by another lengthy period in the returns department at the Times- Mirror Book Club. Even after his retirement, he worked into his 70’s as a local pharmacy delivery driver for the Prescription Center.
He was a lifelong member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish in South Scranton. An active member of the IAM Union formerly serving as district president, he was also a board member of the Scranton Liederkranz.
Even upon retirement, Thomas stayed fit. An avid runner, he won various athletic competitions in his 50’s and 60’s. He was also a selfless volunteer for Meals on Wheels of NEPA. Also possessing a knack for home improvement, he was a self-taught crafty carpenter. Now at peace after his courageous battle, Thomas was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will forever be missed.
He is survived by his two loving sons, Michael and Thomas Melisky, Jr., both of Scranton; a stepdaughter, Joan, of Lititz; two grandchildren, Heather Elizabeth and Cory Melisky; a great-grandson, Michael Van Vleck; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Madelyn Mandichak Melisky, mother to his sons; daughter-in-law, Linda Melisky; and seven siblings, Walter, Joseph, Eugene, Michael and Edward Melisky, Margaret Myslewicz and Anna Koloras.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Buriel at 10 in St. Paul of the Cross Parish, 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Scott P. Sterowski, pastor. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery, Scranton.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
