Valerie L. Scandale, age 74, of Old Forge, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning at home. Her husband and best friend, Thomas Scandale, survives. The couple were married on Oct. 7, 1973, most recently celebrating a 43rd wedding anniversary.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., on April 3, 1942, Valerie was the daughter of the late Anthony and Margaret Conte Martello. She graduated from Ridgefield Park High School before earning her bachelor’s degree in education from William Paterson University in 1964. Before moving to Old Forge, she worked as a case worker for Bergen County’s Welfare Board.
She was a devoted and active member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Prince of Peace Parish, in Old Forge, where she sang in its church choir for many years. Kind-hearted, caring and loving accurately described Valerie. She was a loving wife, adoring mother, relative and friend who will certainly be missed forever.
Also surviving are her darling son, Greg Scandale, of Old Forge; her sister, Marge Machyowski, of New Jersey; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Old Forge, to be celebrated by the Rev. August A. Ricciardi, pastor. Burial will follow in the Old Forge Cemetery. Friends and relatives may pay their respects on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
