Irene Gwyn, 87, a resident of the Scranton Health Care Center and previously of Moscow and Tarpon Springs, Fla., died Monday afternoon, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Edward (Ted) Gwyn, on Feb. 9, 2004.
Born in Scranton on May 15, 1929, daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Kuriluk Contos, Irene was a graduate of Taylor High School. She retired in 1995 from Reliable Office Equipment, which she co-owned with her husband for 42 years. She was also a longtime member of the First Church of God in Taylor.
Irene enjoyed traveling extensively, especially throughout Europe with her husband and enjoyed many family summer vacations at the New Jersey Shore. An impeccable and immaculate housekeeper, Irene was also a tremendous cook. Her family meals were memorable, especially at holidays, where her greatest joy came hosting her adoring family.
She will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Passing away peacefully with her family by her side, she will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her two daughters, Jacqueline Johnson and husband, Jack, Waverly; and Linda Speicher and husband, Anthony, Dunmore; five grandchildren, Jason and wife Breah, Justin and wife Megan and Alexis Johnson, Sarah and John Speicher; four great-grandchildren, Jackson, Zoë, Justin, Jr. and Emerson Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, George Contos.
Her family wishes to thank the entire staffs of both Scranton Health Care Center and Personal Home Health Care and Hospice (PHHC) for the amazing care collectively given to Irene throughout her illness.
Funeral services by the Rev. Doug Hoeffner, pastor of the First Church of God, will be private as per Irene’s wishes. Burial will follow services at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Twp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Irene’s name to either the Friends of the Poor, 2300 Adams Ave, Scranton, PA 18509; Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Twp., PA 18411.
Arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge.
