Obituaries

Thomas J. Mahoney, age 63, a lifelong resident of Scranton, passed away Sunday evening at Regional Hospital. Surviving is his beloved wife and best friend of 33 years, JoAnn Engle Diano.
Born on November 13, 1952 and son of the late Frank T. and Ceil McDonough Mahoney, Tom attended West Scranton High School before working for the former Nationwide Casket Company. Prior to becoming ill, he worked as a driver and mechanic for Public Service Taxi Company.
Tom was an avid New York Yankees fan who enjoyed the casino and playing cards. He will long be remembered as a math whizz and his ability to “tinker” with anything needing fixing was extraordinary. He was an animal lover, adoring his “baby girl” cat, “Fuzzy.” Loved by many, he will be dearly missed.
He is also survived by his sisters, Patricia Miller, Mary Jeanne Kehl and Ceil Christiano and husband Rich, all of Scranton; two step-sons, Dominic and Peter Diano and wife Lori, all of Scranton; two grandchildren, Peter and Abby Diano; his sister-in-law, Shirl (Kat) Engle of Springbrook Twp.; his brothers-in-law, Peter, Richard and Robert Engle and wife Karen, all of Scranton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Also preceding him in death were brothers, Joseph and Frank Mahoney; a step-son, Joseph Diano; a mother-in-law, Helen Engle; and a brother-in-law, Edward Engle.
Blessing services by Rev. Joseph Sica are scheduled for Thursday at 7:00PM in the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday from 4:00PM until services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s name to either the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 15120, Chicago, IL., 60693, or to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Township, PA., 18411.
