Doris L. Baptist, age 92, of Moosic, and formerly of Old Forge, passed away Thursday at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scranton, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Baptist, on May 18, 1974.
Born in Old Forge on New Year’s Day, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Fortunato and Rosina Gigliotti Loprete. A proud graduate of the Old Forge High School’s Class of 1941, Doris then attended Lackawanna Business College. She also studied early childhood education at both Marywood University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For nearly 30 years prior to her retirement, she worked as a Teacher’s Aide for Head Start of Lackawanna County. The job she enjoyed most, however, was raising her nine adoring children.
She was an extensive traveler, having traveled throughout both the United States with her O.F.H.S. graduating class and Europe with family and friends. She possessed an amazing voice and loved to sing. She adored animals, and had a deep appreciation for nature. Also a talented cook, Doris was famous for keeping family and friends well fed. Loved by many, she will be forever missed.
Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a lifetime member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Prince of Peace Parish, in Old Forge.
She is survived by her nine children, Paul and wife Paula of Moosic, Cathy and husband Richard of East Stroudsburg, Anthony and wife Bette of Harding, Robert of Old Forge, William of Tustin, California, Dodi (Doris) and husband Bill of Old Forge, Rosemary of Moosic, Jon and wife Shuyi of Buckeye, Arizona, and Carol and husband Donald of Scranton; 7 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Emelio Loprete, Angelina Margotta, Catherine Bilandi, Mary Dorsey and Theresa Moore.
Her family would like to thank Dr. Armando Sallavanti for the years of amazing care he had given to Doris, and also to the entire staff of Linwood Nursing Center.
Blessing services are scheduled for Wednesday at 10:00AM in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Twp.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Doris’ name to the donor’s favorite charity.
