Carmella Gatto, age 95, formerly of Arlington, Virginia, passed away Wednesday afternoon at Mountain View Care Center in Scranton, after an illness.
Born on December 5, 1920 and raised in Old Forge, Carmella was the daughter of the late Thomas and Carmella Cianataia Gatto. A graduate of Old Forge High School, Class of 1938, Carmella moved to the Washington D.C. area upon graduation, where she would work for the Federal Government for over 40 years. She wrote for the Naval Newspaper and eventually became an expert on Russian Intelligence, prior to her retirement.
Carmella had the kindest of hearts, volunteering at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for many years, as well as serving as the tour guide to any of her family and friends visiting her in Washington D.C. She was a world traveler, having covered the globe, and always had a fondness for a good martini. Adored by her nieces and nephews, she will be forever missed.
Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a member of Prince of Peace Parish in Old Forge.
She is survived by her many adoring nieces and nephews.
The youngest of twelve, Carmella was preceded in death by her eleven siblings.
Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 11:15AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with a noon Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Church at Prince of Peace Parish, 123 West Grace Street in Old Forge, to be celebrated by Rev. August A. Ricciardi, Pastor. Interment will follow at Old Forge Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Saturday from 10:00AM until services.
