Justina “Tinchie” Gyza Ludwig, 84, of Scranton, died Tuesday at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pa. She was the wife of Lloyd Luke “Barney” Ludwig, who died June 28, 1998.
Born in Old Forge on Oct. 12, 1931, she was the daughter of the late John and Matrona Yanchar Gyza. After graduating from Old Forge High School, she moved to Levittown and became the produce manager of Safefoods Market. Returning to the area, she worked at Augustine’s Club 17, then cared for her husband before his death. She was a member of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church, where she was a devoted choir member. She had a special gift communicating with pets and was known for her sharp sense of humor that could brighten up a room. She was truly one-of-a-kind and we will miss her so much.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Jewish Home, the VNA Home Health and Hospice, Sinclair’s Home Care and her dear friends at Webster Towers.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Evelyn Saxton, Levittown, and family; a brother, Peter Gyza, Colorado Springs; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Emily Zielenski, Mary Adamiak, Ann Serniak Freeman and Julie Taffera; and three brothers, Constantine and Thomas Gyza, and Archimandrite Sebastian of St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Monastery.
Funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Orthodox Church, 512 Summer St., Old Forge, by the Rev. Peter Henry, rector. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 9:30 to 10 at the church, before the service. Parastas services will be Friday, 6 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Church.
Arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge.
