Sophie Alexandra Hazzouri passed away peacefully with her son by her side on Sunday at the age of 96.
She was the youngest of twelve and daughter of Jacob and Alexandra Kozlowski Matuszewski, both of whom were Polish immigrants. Through her many challenges and heartbreaks in life, she carried on with great dignity and grace. We could always find “Mom” tending to her flower garden, rolling out pie crusts or reading with the family dog, Toby, and her cats by her side.
Losing her eyesight and the ability to read became another challenge for her. Now she is reunited with the greatest loss of her life, her son, Halem, who died tragically at the age of 23.
Surviving are her son, A.J., her daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Patrick McInroy and Jemille (Tater) and Kevin Kearney; and the light of her life, her grandson, Kevin, and wife, Natalie. Sadly she passed before the arrival of her great-grandson.
She nurtured all of her nieces and nephews, who they affectionately called “Aunt Zosh.” Thank you for loving her, spending time with her, making her favorite foods and telling her she was your favorite.
Preceding her in death were siblings, Cassie Stewart, Sister Jerome of Holy Family of Nazareth, Peter, Leo, Anthony and Stanley Matuszewski, Pearl Preambo, John Kozlowski and twin sisters. A brother, Paul, survives.
Her family would like to thank her longtime physician, Anees Fogley, and staff; and her visiting physician, Kurt Moran, and staff.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 8, at 9:30 a.m. at her childhood church, St. Mary’s Visitation, 1090 Carmalt St., Dickson City.
Memorial contributions may be made in Sophie’s name to either her parish, St. Ann Maronite Church, c/o Msgr. Francis Marini, 1320 Price St., Scranton, PA 18504 or to the Children’s Advocacy Center, c/o Mary Ann LaPorta, 1710 Mulberry St., Scranton, PA 18510.
