Police Sgt. (ret.) Earl J. Kugler, Sr., age 79, of Scott Twp., and formerly of West Scranton, passed away Wednesday evening at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, after an illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Ann (Nancy) Gerrity Kugler, on August 31, 2005.
Born in Scranton on May 26, 1937, son of the late Earl H. and Barbara Dormangen Kugler, Earl was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1956, before eventually earning a degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Scranton. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam era, achieving the rank of Sergeant before his Honorable Discharge from duty.
He then joined the Scranton Police Department in 1960. He completed the Philadelphia Police; Pa. State Police; and F.B.I. Academies before achieving the rank of Sergeant before his retirement from the force in 1989. After retirement, he worked for the U.S. Marshals Service for 14 years.
Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Parish. A member of both the ‘Blue Knights’ Motorcycle Club and the Scott Twp. Hose Co., he served as a Life Member with the Boy Scouts of America, the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Police E.B. Jermyn Lodge 2.
Himself an only child, Earl was proud of raising a large family. He was a proud father, loving grandfather and adoring great-grandfather who will be forever missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by five children, Joseph Kugler and wife Marialise of Scott Twp., James Kugler and wife Leisa of Tunkhannock, E.J. Kugler and wife Tina of Las Vegas, Nevada, Anne Brink and husband Lewis of Jefferson Twp., and Kevin Kugler and Shannon of Scott Twp.; 11 grandchildren, Joseph, Matthew, Barbara, Gregory, Katherine, Ryan, Earl Joseph III, Michael and Ireland Kugler, and Nicholas and Christopher Brink; and 4 great-grandchildren, Jackson, Michael and Madison Kugler and Madlyn Brink. As well as special friend, Lori Dixon.
His family would like to extend their appreciation to both the Moses Taylor Hospital Staff and to the Scranton Police Department for the amazing support provided to them during this difficult time.
Funeral services will begin on Wednesday at 9:00AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with military rites by the AMVETS Honor Guard, followed by a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street, West Scranton. Private interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Earl’s name to the Boy Scouts of America c/o Troop #265 Scott Township Community Center, Box 342D, Olyphant, Pa., 18447.
