Joseph (Joey) Killeen, 53, of Scranton, died Thursday under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart’s Inpatient Unit of Dunmore, after a courageous three-year battle with lung cancer.
Born in Scranton on Nov. 24, 1962, son of Joan Cronin Killeen, Scranton, and the late Joseph T. Killeen, Joey was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1980. An avid pool player, he belonged to the Scranton Pool League. He was a founding member of Park Place River Association. He was an advid fan of both the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. Joey will be sorely missed by his loving family, all of whom were his constant companions on his journey. Additionally, Joey will be missed by his wonderful friends, whom he considered family and meant so much to him.
Also surviving are his brother, Michael and wife, Barb, Scranton; three sisters, Ellen Pocius and her husband, Tom, Scranton; Patricia Noble and her husband, Robert, Dunmore; and Mary Munley and her husband, Joseph, Macungie; cherished nieces and nephews, Kacie and Kelsey Killeen, Amy Pocius, Keith Kearney, Joseph Munley Jr.; Kathleen Laflin and her husband, Eric.
His family would like to thank the staffs of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Hershey Medical Center and NROC, especially Joey’s nurse, Sharon, Drs. Greco, Kabak, Gryn and Bakaidi, and Dr. Bakaidi’s nursing staff, and a special thank you to Joey’s friends who were so kind, caring and supportive to him during his three-year battle with lung cancer.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1608 Oram St., West Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Stephen Krawontka, associate pastor. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joey’s name to the American Lung Association, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL 60601; or the Park Place River Association, Attn: Kim Thompson, 1122 Albright Ave., Scranton, PA 18508.
