Mary G. Gerrity, R.N., age 84, a longtime West Scranton resident, passed away Monday evening at Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward R. Gerrity, Sr., in 1971.
Born in Throop on July 17, 1931, Mary was the daughter of the late John and Mary Bykowski Gloss. A graduate of the former Throop High School, Class of 1949, she then earned her Nursing Degree from the Scranton State Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She was employed by the Scranton State Hospital as a Registered Nurse, before raising her family.
A pillar of St. Patrick’s Church in West Scranton, Mary was a devoted church member who also served in the church’s Society of the Faithful. A loving mother and adoring grandmother, her greatest joy came while spending time with her 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting and reading. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her six children, Barbara Zvonchenko and husband Robert of Hudson, Florida, Mary Lou Nawrocki and husband Bill of Fairfax, Virginia, James Gerrity and former wife Karen of Scranton, Richard Gerrity and wife Felicia of Scranton, Rella Dempsey and husband Tim of Dunmore and Joseph Gerrity and wife Karen of Scranton; a brother, Ed Gloss of East Meadow, New York; 18 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A son, Edward R. Gerrity, Jr.; and siblings, Paul, Joseph, Frank, Stanley, Chet, John and Peter Gloss, and Ann Korry, also preceded her in death.
Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 8:45AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in West Scranton. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
