Ann Mackarey, age 63, of Clarks Summit, died early Sunday morning at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. She is survived by her beloved husband and best friend, Michael J. Mackarey. The couple would have celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on May 31.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 30, 1952, and daughter of the late Rocco and Hildegarde Simerson Santora, Ann was a graduate of St. Brendan’s High School in Brooklyn. Along with her husband, she was a longtime member of St. Ann Maronite Church in West Scranton. Before her passing, she worked alongside her husband at his business, M.J. Mackarey Snacks.
Detailed and meticulous, any task she ever undertook she performed to perfection. She adored her family, especially her three grandchildren. Passing away unexpectedly Sunday morning, she will be forever missed by her relatives and friends.
Surviving are her loving son, Brian DeMeglio and wife, Carolyn of Clarks Summit; her darling grandchildren, Nathan, Sabrina and Alexander DeMeglio; her brother, Alfred Santora and wife, Mary of California; her brother-in-law, Joseph Davitt of Lake Winola; her sisters-in-law, Montura, Viola and husband, Carl of Penn Valley; Marianne Cummings and husband, Joseph of Roaring Brook Twp.; and Margo Opsasnick and husband, Dr. Stephen of Scranton; nieces and nephews, Joseph Schwartz and wife, Sunny Ann; Donna Gianacopolis and husband, Louis; Jean Hannon and husband, Rob; Rich Santora and Kathleen Efthimiou; and many great-nieces and great-nephews, including a great-niece dear to Ann’s heart, Raina Santora.
Ann was also preceded in death by her first husband, John Buchner, in 1981; and her sister, Joan Davitt in 2015.
Funeral services will begin on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with a 10 Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson St., West Scranton. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Twp. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ann’s name to either St. Joseph’s Center Foundation, 2010 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509, or due to Ann’s love for animals, Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Township, PA 18411.
