Kathleen (Kathy) Mullarkey, R.N., age 60, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Friday evening under the care of the staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore.
Born on April 4, 1955, daughter of Angela Ferraro Mullarkey Minella of West Scranton and the late Patrick J. Mullarkey, Kathy was a graduate of the former West Catholic High School, Class of 1973. A graduate of Mercy Hospital’s School of Nursing, her career as a Pediatric Registered Nurse, working for Mercy Hospital, spanned nearly 20 years.
A devoted Roman Catholic, Kathy played an active role in St. Patrick’s Church Parish in West Scranton, where she also served as Administrative Assistant, Eucharistic Minister and Sacristan. She was passionate about her work and her church, but her greatest joy came in spending time with her adoring nieces and nephews.
Passing away peacefully surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness, she will be forever missed by her family and friends.
She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Mullarkey and wife Marie and her sister, Patricia Johns, all of Scranton; nieces and nephews, Gregory and Kyle Johns of North Carolina, Mario Johns of Dunmore, Stacy, Kelly and husband Joe, C.J., and Patrick Mullarkey and wife Molly, all of Scranton; and great nieces and great nephews, Gavin, Christopher, Talan, Lilyannah and Trey.
She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Angelo R. Minella, in 2007.
Her family would like to thank the amazing staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart who collectively made such a difficult time much more comfortable for both them, as well as Kathy.
Funeral services will begin on Thursday at 9:30AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in Scranton, to be celebrated by Msgr. David L. Tressler. Interment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 4-8:00pm at the funeral home.
