John (Cooke) Morgan, age 83, a lifelong resident of Old Forge, died at home Sunday evening under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Virginia P. Morgan, on November 29, 2008.
Born on October 10, 1932, son of the late Gilbert and Mildred Hoover Morgan, Cooke was educated in Sibley Schools. In his youth, he began his personal business endeavours with a local newspaper delivery route. He began the ‘Door Stop Market’, a grocery delivery business before opening a retail grocery store in Old Forge. He and his wife had started Cook’s Banner Food Store of Old Forge, which in 1968 transitioned into Cook’s Wholesale Foods, Inc. Based on unparalled value, service and reliability, the business expanded to operate offices and processing facilities in Old Forge, Berwick and Swoyersville.
An animal lover, he adored his dog, “Rocky.” Passing away surrounded by his loving family, he leaves behind his humble nature and dedicated work ethic. He will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his sons, Jack Morgan and wife Sara of Old Forge, and Gilbert Morgan and wife Deborah of Berwick; his sister, Brooke Thomas and husband Donald of York; six grandchildren, Melanie Shatto, Danielle Gaynor, Heather Mason, John, Rudy and Paula Morgan; six great grandchildren, Reagan, Greyson and Brayden Gaynor, Rohn and Tess Mason, and Curtis Morgan; and two nieces.
His family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli; the entire staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart; and Cooke’s caregivers, especially Carol Krenitsky, for the tremendous care given to him throughout his illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 10:00AM in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge. Interment will follow in Marcy Cemetery, Duryea.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Cooke’s name to either Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Rd., S. Abington Twp., Pa., 18411, or to Hospice of the Sacred Heart’s Memorial Fund, 600 Baltimore Dr., Wilkes-Barre, Pa., 18702.
