Martha S. Kovaleski, 91, a resident of St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home, died Thursday night surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Joseph S. Kovaleski, who died in June 1988.
Born May 10, 1924 in Moundsville, West Virginia, daughter of the late Pawel and Victoria Krawczyk, she was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and a longtime member of St. Ann’s Basilica. Before retirement, she was employed at Mayflower Manufacturing Co.
Martha was an artist with a needle and thread, designing and creating beautiful garments for her family. Her children fondly recall her abilities in the kitchen, the gathering place for all holiday meals she prepared with love. One of Martha’s greatest joys was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Ann’s Quilting Club, Roundwoods Senior Citizens Club, and the West Side Senior Center. She enjoyed the time spent with her many loyal friends at Jackson Heights apartments, where she lived for several years.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Natalie Lee and Wanda Lisak; and a brother, Isadore Krawczyk.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth and wife Frances, Jessup; Joseph and wife Karen, Justus; two daughters, Susan Musheno and husband, John, Jessup; Karen McNamara and husband, Kevin, Canandaigua, NY; 12 grandchildren, Kevin, Kenneth, and Michael Kovaleski; Joseph and Justin Kovaleski; Kim Laboranti and Colleen Penzone; Matthew, Mark and Megan Musheno; Katherine and Jeffrey McNamara; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of St Mary’s Villa Nursing Home for the wonderful care they provided during her stay, as well as Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the support they provided in her final days
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Monday at 9:15AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Avenue in West Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Ann’s Basilica, St. Ann St., West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev.
