Elizabeth Brigid Schlau, 55, of Lake Ariel died Wednesday in the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, after a courageous 15-month battle with brain and lung cancer with her loving family by her side. Her husband of 30 years is Leonard “Lenny” Schlau.
Born Sept. 13, 1959, in Bayside, Queens, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Louis and Ann Hasson Carrano. Known to everyone as Brigid, she and her family moved to Lake Ariel in 2002. For 10 years, she was employed by Weis Markets, Store No. 163, Hamlin, as the deli manager, until her illness caused her to retire in April 2014.
A loving wife, mother, sister and aunt, Brigid had a spirit that wouldn’t quit. Even though she succumbed to her illness, her tenacity and will to fight will live on as an encouragement and a lesson in how to be strong-willed and overcome obstacles. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving in addition to her beloved husband are two daughters, Nicole, Winona, Minn.; and Jaime, at home, and a senior at Bloomsburg University; two sisters, Celia Toohig, Amityville, N.Y.; and Anne Leva, Flushing, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are private and under the care of the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
