Irene Wotring, age 89, of Wilkes Barre and formerly of Silver Springs, Maryland, passed away Monday evening at Wilkes Barre General Hospital, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 25 years, Page Wotring.
Born in Avoca on February 7, 1926 and daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Bolanda Babiarz, Irene was a graduate of the former Avoca High School. Prior to her graduation, she took a position as secretary for the U.S. Government in Washington D.C. during WWII. Upon returning home, she worked for Capital Records, before moving to Maryland where she was employed as an executive secretary for Alcoa Aluminum. A very devoted Catholic, she was a member of Queen of the Apostles Parish in Avoca.
Truly one of a kind, Irene was a proud woman who defined class. She always enjoyed a good time, especially those spent with her family. A loving sister, aunt and great aunt, she will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her sisters, Mary Jane Kuchar of Old Forge, Violet Grabowski of Avoca and Helen O’Hop of Avoca; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Her dear companion, Wasil (Wash) Polohovitch, on February 11th; and siblings, Mildred Grella, Joseph, Leo, Edward and John Babiarz, also preceded her in death.
Her family is grateful for the amazing kindness betsowed upon them by W.B. General Hospital’s 7th floor and I.C.U., especially Marie Sweeney, as well as Doctors Cynthia Solomon and Gary Neale.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Saturday at 9:45AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with a 10:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church at Queen of the Apostle’s Parish, 715 Hawthorne Street in Avoca, to be celebrated by Rev. Phillip Sladicka, Pastor. Interment will follow at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Moosic. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Saturday from 8:30AM until services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Irene’s name to her church, Queen of the Apostles, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, 18641.
