Joseph R. Czerkas, age 82, of Old Forge, passed away Thursday morning at home. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Sopp Czerkas. Wed on June 26, 1954, the couple were married for 60 amazing years.
Born in Taylor on May 19, 1932, son of the late Bruno and Julia Gnall Czerkas, Joseph was a graduate of the former Taylor High School. A Staff Sgt. for the United States Air Force, he was honorably discharged after serving during the Korean War. For his service to his country, he was honored with the Good Conduct and National Defense Service Medals. For 32 years, he served as produce clerk for several area A&P Food Markets. Upon retirement from the Old Forge store, he worked for McKinney Corporation in Scranton. A gun enthusiast, he was an avid hunter and a longtime member of the NRA. He will be forever missed by his dear wife, family and friends.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Czerkas, Jr.; and brothers, Edward, Leonard and Walter Czerkas.
Blessing services are scheduled for Friday, May 15th, at 2:30PM in the Cathedral Cemetery Chapel, Oram Street in West Scranton.
His wife wishes to thank both Drs. Carl Barsigian and Michael Jalowiec for the tremendous care they had both given to Joseph throughout the years.
