Helen S. Daniels, age 97, of Duryea and formerly of Old Forge, passed away Wednesday under the care of the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit of Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Nicholas Daniels, in 1990, and her first husband, August Kramer, after a mining accident, in 1941.
Born in Duryea on April 13, 1918, daughter of the late Leo and Marie Weigo Skoda, Helen was a graduate of the former Duryea High School. Prior to her retirement, she worked for Duchess Factory, at Brooks Manufacturing, and Kimble-Owens Illinois. She was an active and longtime member of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church in Old Forge. In her youth, she enjoyed camping and swimming. A talented seamstress, she enjoyed crocheting and needle work, and her favorite pastime was bowling. A talented baker and cook, she was a gardener who kept her home and lawn immaculate. A loving mother, sister and grandmother, she will be forever missed by all of her loved ones.
She is survived by her sons, August Kramer and wife Nancy of Duryea and Francis Kramer and wife Kathryn of Yeadon; her sister, Irene Graham of Duryea; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; son-in-law, John Shields of Scranton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Marianne Shields, in 2013; her siblings, Dorothy, Leo, Anna, Joseph, William and Edmund; and three great grandsons also preceded her in death.
A former resident of Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scranton, her family deeply appreciates the kindness and care given to Helen during her stay with them.
Funeral services, to be conducted by Rev. Dr. Al Cremard, Senior Pastor of the Independant Bible Church in Duryea, are scheduled for Monday at 11:00am in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge. Interment will follow in the Marcy Cemetery, Duryea.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Sunday between 2-5:00PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105.
