Anita J. Minelli Salerno, 71, of Old Forge, died Tuesday evening at Hershey Medical Center.
Born on January 4, 1944 in Old Forge, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Jean Grandoni Minelli. Anita was a 1961 graduate of Old Forge High School, where she was a National Merit finalist. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature and Education in 1965 from Wilkes College and later returned to earn her Master’s Degree in Education. For 38 years, Anita was a devoted teacher who loved her students. She started her career at Bristol Township School District, and eventually moved to the Wilkes-Barre Area School District for 27 years, teaching in the Palmer Street School, the Dan Flood School, and finally retiring from the Bear Creek Elementary School. She was a two year Board Member of the Bear Creek Charter School. Anita was a member of Prince of Peace Parish in Old Forge, regularly attending St. Mary’s Church, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and served on the Old Forge Republican Committee.
Anita was an extremely generous person who always put others before herself, living to make others happy. Very well-educated, she knew every answer on Jeopardy, and even qualified as a contestant three sepatare times. A member of the Disney Club, Anita thoroughly enjoyed her trips to Disney. Her kind and caring manner will leave in indelible mark on all the lives she touched.
Surviving are her loving son, Chris Salerno and girlfriend, Melissa Brun, of Devon; her sister, Phyllis Stahler and husband, David of Harrisburg; her Niece, Alissa Stahler; her nephew, Jonathan Stahler; several cousins; and her beloved extended family, Tony Salerno and family in California
A sister, Rita Minelli; and cousins, Marie Kane, Evelyn Notarim and Alphonso Passeri also preceded her in death.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday to begin at 9:15 AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 N. Main Street, Old Forge, with a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Assumption Church at Prince of Peace Parish, 123 West Grace Street, Old Forge, to be celebrated by Rev. August A. Riccardi, pastor. Interment in Marcy Cemetery, Duryea will be private due to the inclimate conditions.
Relative and friends may pay their respects on Saturday, February 21st, between 4 and 7 PM in the funeral home.
