William (Bill) Catterall, age 92, a resident of Little Flower Manor in Wilkes Barre, passed away Monday afternoon. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Elaine VanCott Catterall, on March 20, 2014.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, son of the late Francis and Mary Fleming Catterall, Bill was a graduate of Seton Hall University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He retired as a manager for General Electric in Fairfield, New Jersey, after 34 dedicated years of service. A United States Army Veteran, Bill ranked as Staff Sergeant under General George Patton’s Third Army in the European Theater of WWII. He proudly served in the 281st Engineer Combat Battalion. An avid fisherman and a talented woodworker, he enjoyed reading history books. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by three children, Tracey Rinehimer and husband Geary of Moosic, Van Catterall and wife Dianne of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Mark Catterall and wife Rosa of York; four grandchildren, William, Christine, Anthony and Adam; three siblings, Aloyius and wife Marge, Thomas and Eleanor; and many nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services by Rev. Richard Ghezzi are scheduled for Friday with full military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard to follow in the Dunmore Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s name to either the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas, 66675, or to the American Cancer Society, 712 South Keyser Avenue, Taylor, Pa., 18517. Arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge.
