Paul James Cooney, age 52 and a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Friday unexpectedly at home. He is survived by his adoring wife of 29 years, Lori Loomis Cooney. The couple would have celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on September 7th.
Born on March 4, 1962, son of Catherine McNerney Cooney of Scranton and the late James J. Cooney, Paul graduated from West Scranton High School, Class of 1980, before attending Lackawanna Junior College. He worked as a caretaker for the Cathedral Cemetery of Scranton.
A longtime attendee of St. Patrick’s Church, Paul was a family man who loved those around him, especially his two grandchildren. Taken from those who loved him too soon, he will be forever missed.
He is also survived by his daughter, Ann Shafer and husband Robert of Scranton; his six siblings, James J. Cooney and wife Maryann of Scranton, Karen Hogan and husband William of Taylor, Maryann Thomas and husband Robert of Scranton, Terese Pellegrino of Scranton, Maureen Henry and husband Philip of Dunmore and Patricia Cooney of Scranton; two grandchildren, Isaiah and Emily Shafer of Scranton; a father-in-law, John Loomis of Scranton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Marie and James McNerney; paternal grandparents, Ann and William Cooney; a mother-in-law, Marion Loomis; a brother-in-law, Ralph R. Pellegrino; and a nephew, Ralph J. Pellegrino.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 9:15AM from the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in West Scranton. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday between 3-7:00PM at the funeral home.
