Marjorie Berlew, age 98, an 8-year resident of the Scranton Health Care Center and formerly of Moosic, passed away on Monday evening. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Robert Lloyd Berlew, on February 12, 1999.
Born in Kingston on July 17, 1916, daughter of the late George and Cora Knecht Carter, Marjorie owned and operated Berlew’s Market, a Moosic landmark, along with her husband for many years. A longtime pillar of the Moosic United Methodist Church, she formerly served as church treasurer, on the church’s Official Board, and in the church’s Mizpah Class. She was also a member of the Moosic Senior Citizens. Her favorite pastimes were knitting her dolls and playing word search games. A loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a great-great grandmother, Marjorie will be dearly missed by all of those who loved her.
She is survived by her three daughters, Beverly Belles and husband Daniel of Moosic, Marjorie (Molly) Raphael and husband Louis of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and Susan Jones and husband Harry of Ransom Twp.; five grandchildren, Carol Wanck, Susan Englehardt, Edward Schmitt, Heather Tecson and Todd Jones; 12 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren; dear friends, Joan O’Dell, Millie and Michael Felter and Rita Thomas, and many other friends from Moosic Methodist Church.
She was also preceded by her siblings, Harry Emerson Carter, George Russell Carter and Dr. Donald Lee Carter, M.D.
Her family wishes to thank the entire staffs of both Scranton Health Care Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their compassionate and loving care given to both them and Marjorie through the years.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 11:00AM in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street in Old Forge, to be conducted by Cathy Fisk, Lay Servant of the Elm Park United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Springbrook Cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Saturday from 10:00AM until services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marjorie’s name to the Scranton Health Care Center’s Resident Activity Fund, 2933 McCarthy Street in Scranton, 18503.
