William J. Fiorini, age 71, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Friday at the Regional Hospital of Scranton. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret McGough Fiorini. The couple celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on September 18th.
Born on March 2, 1943, son of the late Joseph and Joanna Gigli Fiorini, William graduated from the former Scranton Central High School, Class of 1961, before studying Architectural Engineering at Penn State University. A proud member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard for 23 years, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army Reserves in 1994 after achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Early in his career, Bill worked as an Architectural Engineer for Pasqual Notartomaso. After working as a general foreman for his father’s construction business, he began Fiorini Construction Company, Inc., in 1981. He first served as the City of Scranton’s Master Code Official and later, the Director of Licensing, Inspection and Permits, from 1993 until 2007. He was a code enforcement officer for the Building Inspection Underwriters of Pennsylvania, prior to his illness.
A Master Code Official, he earned the State of Pennsylvania’s Building Code Official License #53. Bill was a member of the International Brick Layers Union; Allied Craftworkers International Association of Electrical Inspectors, Keystone Chapter; and a member West Scranton’s Victor Alfieri Club. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church in West Scranton.
An avid bocce ball player, he also enjoyed his garden. His greatest joy came in spending time with his grandchildren. A loving and hard working husband, father, grandfather, he will be forever missed by his family and friends.
He is also survived by his three children, Joseph William Fiorini and wife Sharon of Scranton, Lisa Marie Fiorini of Scranton, and William Joseph Fiorini and wife Joy of Nicholson; a brother, James Fiorini and wife Sharon of Collegeville, Aunt Marylou Sabatino-Greachen, and husband John of Marietta Ohio: three beloved grandchildren, Victoria, Paolo and Isabella Fiorini; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His family would like to acknowledge Doctors Gerard Nealon, Christopher Dressel, and Ajay Shetty, and doctors of Northeastern Surgical Specialist PC, and whose collective care and compassion provided them much comfort during William’s illness.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Thursday at 9:30AM from the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street, Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Martin Boylan, Pastor. Interment with military rites by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 5-8:00PM at the funeral home.
