Chester E. Callis, age 83, of Taylor, died Wednesday evening at Riverside Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Taylor. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Scherer Callis. Wed on October 29, 1955, the couple would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this year.
Born in Old Forge on October 11, 1930, he was the son of the late Julia and John Callis, Attending the former St. Michael’s School, he was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church prior to its closing. Honorably serving our country in the United States Army, he was a member of the VFW Post #4954 in Old Forge. He was also a member of Old Forge Senior Citizens. An avid gardener and craftsman, he always enjoyed visiting a good fleamarket. He will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends.
He is survived by his three children, Chester Callis and wife Christine of Taylor, David Callis and wife Karin of Dickson City, and Judy Shoemaker and husband David of Scranton; his brother, Raymond Callis of Dickson City; four grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Callis and Paul and Breanna Shoemaker; a great granddaughter, Gabriella; and many nieces and nephews.
Brothers, Frank, Joseph and John Callis; and a sister, Helen Trakimus, also preceded him in death.
A graveside blessing service to be celebrated by Rev. Andrew Sinnott, Pastor of Nativity of Our Lord in Duryea, is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00AM at Holy Cross Cemetery in Old Forge.
