Josephine “Nonnie” Chernansky, age 90, a resident of West Scranton and former resident of Dickson City died Monday under the care of the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Andrew Chernansky, on October 25, 2001.
Born on April 17, 1924, daughter of the late Nelson and Helen Arlandis, Josephine was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1942. Prior to her retirement, she worked for Casual Sportswear of Throop. Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a longtime member of St. Ann’s Basilica Parish in West Scranton. A die-hard Philadelphia Phillies fan who enjoyed playing slots at the Mohegan Sun Casino, Josephine’s greatest joy came while spending time with her adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren. Forever missed by those who loved her, she passed away peacefully on Monday surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her children, a daughter Kathleen Coyne and husband James, Sr.,, who was also Josephine’s beloved best friend, with whom she resided, and a son Michael Nicosia and wife Susan of Columbia Falls, Montana; siblings, Rosemary Graziano of Old Forge, Dolores Chilone, Patricia English and husband Richard, and Fred Arlandis and wife Arlene, all of Scranton; seven grandchildren, Kory Coyne and wife Michelle, James Coyne, Jr., and fiance Amanda Wright, and Robert, Anna, Carla, Christine and Michael Nicosia, Jr.; eleven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to acknowledge Dr. Ferdinand J. Manahan and the entire staff of Geisinger C.M.C.’s Emergency Room staff, also VNA Hospice for the amazing treatment given to Josephine while she was under their care.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Friday at 9:15AM from the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann’s Basilica to be celebrated by Rev. Joseph Jones, Associate Pastor. Interment will follow at Holy Ghost Parish Cemetery in Jessup. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday between 5-8:00PM at the funeral home.
In appreciation to Josephine’s extended family at Telespond, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to Telespond Senior Services Inc., 1200 Saginaw St., Scranton, 18505.
