Sharon Bieryla, R.N., age 65 of Old Forge, died Saturday evening under the care of the VNA Hospice Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton after a courageous 3 ½ year battle with cancer. Her loving husband of 41 years is Robert Bieryla.
Born November 18, 1948 in Scranton, daughter of the late Richard and Grace Conti Durkin, Sharon was a graduate of West Scranton High School and Scranton State General Hospital School of Nursing. She also attended the University of Scranton and had a certification in Gerentology. A registered nurse, Sharon retired from Clarks Summit State Hospital where she cared for patients with respect and compassion.
Sharon lovingly welcomed holiday events at her home, while showcasing her culinary talents. She also enjoyed taking swim classes with her swim pals at the Jewish Community Center. In the past year, she became an avid domino player, thanks to her friends in Florida. She was a great wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law, and her grandchildren were the light of her life.
Also surviving are four daughters, Amy Bieryla and husband Brad Ceulers of Coatesville; Christine Bieryla of Old Forge, Elizabeth Bonini and husband Michael of Mechanicsburg and Kate Tedesco and husband Matthew of Huntingtown, Maryland; Granddaughters, Ava and Sophia Ceulers; and grandsons, Dominic and Dante Bonini.
Two brothers, Robert and Dennis Durkin, also preceded her in death.
A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for Thursday at 10:00A.M. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Prince of Peace Parish, 123 West Grace Street in Old Forge, to be celebrated by Rev. August A. Ricciardi, Pastor. Those wishing to attend the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will follow at St. Mary of Czestochowa Cemetery in Moosic.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 5-8:00PM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, 517 North Main Street, Old Forge.
