Furey Pugliano, age 89, a lifelong resident of Old Forge, passed away Sunday at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. Preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Rose Splendido Pugliano, on May 2, 1993, he is survived by his wife, Bernice Larnerd Webb Pugliano, at home.
Born on February 20, 1925, son of the late Frank and Domenica Mazzei Pugliano, Furey was a graduate of Old Forge High School, Class of 1943. Upon graduation, he served in the Army Air Force during WWII as an airplane and engine mechanic, having earned the American Theater Service, Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medals before his honorable discharge. A longtime Federal Aviation Administration air traffic controller at the Scranton/Wilkes Barre International Airport, he also served as an instructor prior to his retirement. A member of the Anthracite Pilots Club, he proudly held his private pilots license for many years. An avid NASCAR fan, he also loved taking trips to Atlantic City. A loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is also survived by his children, Donna DiMattia of Old Forge, Lorraine Daniels and husband Mark of Avoca and Louis Pugliano and wife Jeannine of New Hartford, New York; his step-children, Margaret DeMartino and husband Frank of Lake Winola, Lynn Weller and husband Carl of Tampa, Florida, Wayne Webb and wife Donna of Lavonia, Georgia, and Paul Webb and wife Hilda of Fort Stockton, Texas; a brother-in-law, Louis Splendido of Old Forge; six grandchildren, Joseph and Brian DiMattia, Gianna and Marco Daniels, and Dr. Vito and Carlo Pugliano; two great grandchildren, Julian and Kayla DiMattia; and many nieces and nephews.
Brothers, Frank, Anthony, Samuel and John Pugliano; and sisters, Margaret Gulli, Theresa and Madeline Pugliano, and Frances Mundy, also preceded him in death.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 9:30AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Prince of Peace Parish, 123 West Grace Street in Old Forge, to be concelebrated by Rev. August A. Ricciardi, Pastor, and Rev. Joseph F. Cipriano, former Pastor. Interment with full military rites by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery, West Scranton.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday, June 10th, between 4-8:00PM at the funeral home.
