James Patrick Mulherin, age 72, a resident of Jackson Heights Apartments in West Scranton and formerly of Taylor, passed away Monday morning at the VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Joan Godlewski Mulherin. Wed on September 19, 1964, the couple would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
Born in West Scranton on August 18, 1941, son of the late James and Mary Riley Mulherin, Jim was a graduate of the former St. Patrick’s High School. After being honorably discharged from service in the United States Army, he returned home to earn a degree in accounting from Penn State University. Prior to his recent retirement, he worked as a self-employed accountant. A passionate photographer, he also worked for both Breeze Photography and the Triboro Banner. He also worked as a nurse’s aid for Allied Services. A member of and Bible study teacher for the former Immaculate Conception Church in Taylor, he more recently attended St. Lucy’s in West Scranton. He will be dearly missed by those who dearly loved him.
He is also survived by many cousins; nieces, nephews; great nieces and great nephews; and sisters and brothers-in-law.
His wife would like to thank the entire staff of the VA Medical Center, including their Hospice Unit, for the tremendous care given to Jim during his visits.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Thursday at 10:15AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with an 11:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy’s Church, 949 Scranton Street in West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Sam J. Ferretti, Pastor. Interment with full military services by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 5-8:00PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to the American Cancer Society, 712 South Keyser Avenue, Taylor, 18517.
