Shirley E. Strein, age 84, a resident of Avoca, died Thursday at Geisinger – Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Herman Walter Strein, on October 5, 2013. Born in East Lemon Twp., on July 5, 1929, daughter of the late James and Ruth Brown Tisdel, Shirley attended the former Duryea High School. She worked in local dress factories, Brooks and Ronda’s of Old Forge, before retiring. She always enjoyed taking vacations with her family to Atlantic City or Florida. An animal lover, she adored her daughter’s Boston Terrier, ‘Shadow.’ Reunited with her husband, she will be forever missed.
She is survived by three daughters, Wilda Drake and husband Robert of Dickson City, Kathy Wells and husband Joseph of Dunmore and Barbara Lockett and husband Kevin of Pittston, with whom Shirley resided for the past six months; two sons, Frederick Strein and wife Judith of Scranton and William Strein and wife Lori of Tunkhannock; siblings, James Laverne Tisdel and Alberta Croom, both of Delaware; seventeen grandchildren; thirty five great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Susan Hughes; a sister, Mildred Edwards; and brothers, William, Howard and Wayne Tisdel and two infants, also preceded her in death.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at 11:00AM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, to be conducted by Rev. Lynn Mokwa, Pastor of Bowman’s Creek Free Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery, Taylor.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Sunday from 3-6:00PM at the funeral home.
