Michael T. Walsh, age 58, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Sunday at Regional Hospital of Scranton after a courageous battle with cancer. A cornea donor, he gave the gift of sight upon his passing. He is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah Mirtz Walsh. Wed on August 14, 1976, the couple were married for 37 years. Born on April 13, 1955, son of Thomas Walsh of Scranton and the late Ann Marie (Nan) Scanlon Walsh, Michael was a 1973 West Scranton Catholic High School graduate before attending the University of Scranton. Prior to its closing, he worked over 18 years for the Trane Company. Before his illness, he most recently was employed by CPG of Moosic as a lab technician. An avid sports fan, Michael loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed bowling in the local 81 Electricians bowling league. He was a local youth athletics coach for South Scranton little league and junior football. , he and his wife also served as Den parents for the Cub Scouts. He was a self-taught handyman seemingly capable of fixing anything. A loving husband, son, father, brother, and adoring grandfather to six, Michael will never be forgotten by all of those who loved him.
He is survived by his three children, Jeremy Walsh and wife Maura of Dunmore, Ryan Walsh and wife Michele of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, and Sarah Arcurie and husband Graig of Scranton; four siblings, Kevin Walsh, Mary Ann Terry and husband Neil, all of Scranton, Patricia Kelly and husband Kevin of Weatherly, and Kathleen Moroski and husband Thomas of Moosic; six grandchildren, Aidan, Bridget, Caleb and Chloe Walsh, and Luciano and Gaetano Arcurie; and many nieces and nephews.
Infant siblings, Thomas and Nance Walsh; and his loving Saint Bernard, Guinness, also preceded him in death.
His family wishes to thank Drs. Martin Hyzinski, Michael Burke, and Phillip Boccagno, for the tremendous care they had given to Michael throughout the years.
Blessing services by Msgr. Michael J. Delaney are scheduled for Thursday at 10:00AM in the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Interment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wedneday between 5-8:00PM at the funeral home.
