John (Jack) Huggler, age 86, a lifelong resident of Old Forge, died Saturday morning under the care of Commonwealth Hospice of NEPA at Regional Hospital in Scranton. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Burke Huggler. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on February 19th. Born on November 2, 1927, son of the late Fred and Theresa Legg Huggler, Jack was a graduate of Old Forge High School, Class of 1946. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army as a Corporal during the Korean War, earning the WWII Victory and Army of Occupation (Japan) medals. For over thirty years prior to his retirement, he served as a journeyman book binder for the former Haddon Craftsman of Scranton. A longtime member of the Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church in Old Forge, he served as church custodian following his retirement. Extremely active until his recent illness, Jack was a handyman considered a Jack-of-all-trades. Loved by many, he will be dearly missed by all of his dear family and friends.
He is also survived by his daughters, Corrine Huggler and Jackie Gleason and husband Garrett, Sr., all of Old Forge; his brother, Joseph Huggler and wife Peggy of Bordentown, New Jersey; his two grandsons, Garrett, Jr., and Brandon, both of Old Forge; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A son, Gordon Huggler; brothers, George and Emil Huggler; and a sister, Jennie Ray, also preceded him in death.
His family would like to thank both Dr. Edward Dzielak, Jack’s Physician, and Joan Powell, Jack’s niece, for years of extraordinary help and compassionate care.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 10:00AM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, to be conducted by Rev. Donald B. Perry. Interment with full military rites by the AMVETS Honor Guard, Milwaukee Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jack’s name to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, Clarks Summit, 18411.
