Vera Russin, 102 years young, a guest at Abington Manor in Clarks Summit and formerly of Throop, passed away Thursday. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Michael Russin, on September 2, 1996.
Born in Syracuse, New York, on November 13, 1915, and daughter of the late Louis and Bridget Gallagher Mestler, Vera was educated in Dalton schools upon moving to the area. After marriage, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse after graduating from the former Hoyt School of Practical Nursing in Scranton. She worked in the nursery department of Community Medical Center before retiring to raise her family.
She was a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Dunmore for nearly seven decades and until her death, she belonged to Queen of the Apostles Parish in Avoca. An avid reader until losing her sight, she was often reading three novels at a time and an avid bowler years ago, she played in several local leagues. Loved dearly by her family, she will forever be missed.
She is survived by her three children, Michael Russin of Milton, N.Y., MaryAnn Flynn Nuss and husband Warren of Waverly Twp. and John Russin and wife, the former Donna Alu, of Olyphant; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A son-in-law, Frank Flynn; a daughter-in-law, Janet Geroulo Russin; and siblings, Charles, Edward and Ethel Potter, Annabelle Brelish, Mary Jane and Florence Deihl, also preceded Vera in death.
Her family would like to acknowledge and thank the amazing staff of Abington Manor’s third floor for years of care, kindness and love.
A Blessing service to be celebrated by Rev. Phil Sladicka is scheduled for Monday at noon at the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Burial will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 11:00AM until services.
In lieu of flowers and with gratitude for their tremendous care in Vera’s final days, memorial contributions are asked to be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, c/o 600 Baltimore Drive # 7, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., 18702.
